Post-war blocks with a lot of original single-car openings, and some of them still run extension springs.
Most of San Carlos went up after the war, and plenty of those original single-car garages have been widened or converted since. That history is the thing that matters. A converted opening usually ended up with a door and a spring setup that were adapted to fit rather than specified for it, and adapted setups are the ones that come back out of balance.
Extension springs, which turn up here more than anywhere else we cover. They stretch along the horizontal tracks on both sides instead of winding on a bar above the opening. They work, but each one needs a containment cable threaded through it so that a break stays inside the spring rather than crossing the garage. Plenty of the original installs here never got one.

Look at where the springs sit. Torsion is a bar mounted on the wall above the opening. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. Extension is the older arrangement, and it's what we most often find on an original San Carlos garage.
Yes. A containment cable runs down the middle of each extension spring so that if the spring lets go, the pieces stay on the cable instead of traveling across the garage. If your door doesn't have them, we fit them as part of the spring job.
