How do I know if I have extension or torsion springs?
Look at where the springs sit. Torsion is a bar mounted on the wall above the opening. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. Extension is the older arrangement, and it's what an original San Carlos garage is most likely to have.
Do extension springs need a safety cable?
Yes. A containment cable runs down the middle of each extension spring so that if the spring lets go, the pieces stay on the cable instead of traveling across the garage. If your door doesn't have them, we fit them as part of the spring job.
Can I keep using the door with one broken extension spring?
No. Leave it closed if you can and keep clear of the tracks. One spring is now carrying a door built for two, and if there is no containment cable through the broken spring, its pieces are loose. Call and we bring the pair and the cables.
