The cables carry the door's weight from the bottom corners up to the spring shaft. The rollers steer that weight through the curve of the track. Between them they do every hard yard of a door's travel, and both of them wear out quietly.
A cable frays from the inside out, so a failing one can look fine from six feet away. A roller wears flats and slop into its bearing long before it jumps the track. The pattern is the same either way. Caught early it is an inexpensive scheduled job. Caught late it takes a track section or a panel with it, and you have a door off its track instead.

Look at the last few inches near the bottom brackets. Rust bloom or individual wire strands sticking out of the winding are the early warning, and catching them there turns an emergency into a scheduled visit.
Yes, and it is not subtle. The deep rumble a garage door sends through the house is steel rollers running in steel track. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings remove most of it, which is why they are the first thing we suggest for a garage under a bedroom.
